Seasons Of The Klamath River

Fall Guided Fly Fishing
Fall is widely recognized as the prime season for steelhead fishing throughout the expansive Klamath River drainage. By mid-September, steelhead are distributed across the entire system, from Iron Gate Dam down to the estuary. As October unfolds, the presence of Chinook Salmon establishing redds and occupying spawning gravel prompts a deceleration in the steelhead's activity. They take advantage of the abundance of returning salmon for feeding opportunities. Despite relatively warm water temperatures, employing the swung fly technique remains effective. However, as salmon release eggs and insects into the current, dead drifting an egg pattern or nymph becomes exceptionally successful. The early days of November represent the peak for egg drops in the upper river, resulting in the highest catch rates, featuring a mix of "half pounders" and adults averaging 2-4lbs. Given the elevated success rates, embarking on a fall expedition to the Klamath River is an ideal pursuit for those keen to immerse themselves in steelhead fishing. Our Klamath River fly fishing guides allocate a significant portion of our late fall fishing endeavors to the upper reaches of the Klamath.

Winter Steelhead Guided Fly Fishing
During the winter months along the Klamath, we often come across the largest fish of the year. The winter-run fish typically make their presence known with the advent of significant rainfall around Christmas, remaining accessible through February. While many of these fish utilize the lower tributaries for spawning, a notable number are still found in the upper stretches of the river. As temperatures drop during this season, our Klamath River fly fishing guides achieve optimal success by employing nymphs and egg imitations presented on the dead drift. Despite potential deterrents posed by winter conditions, those who embrace the elements can relish a serene and secluded steelhead fishing experience on the Klamath River. Importantly, the upper river's resilience during winter storms, influenced by releases at Iron Gate Dam, ensures consistently fishable conditions, distinguishing it from other steelhead venues that may become unfishable with substantial precipitation. Explore the Klamath River in winter for an opportunity to encounter the largest steelhead and savor the tranquility of this distinctive fishing environment.
